Talent is an innate ability that must be nurtured and honed to reach its fruition. The technique is the execution of said talent, and exceptional execution-only comes with years of practice and trade-craft.
So many years ago when I joined Toastmasters now, in case you don’t know what Toastmasters is, it’s kind of like a nonprofit organization. They’ve clubs all over the world, you could go there and improve your communication skill, and your public speaking skills.
So at the time, I wanted to reduce my accent, because English is not my first language. And I joined a club and I would practice and I would be so afraid to deliver my first speech, which is called an icebreaker simply, you just kind of share a little bit of your story, tell the other club members who you are, and kind of what you do kind of thing.
And I did that and I finish it, I was like, so difficult. And during that time, Toastmasters, they would have these tiny little feedback form, little form like that will print out and hand out to all the people and my club at a time had about maybe 30 people, right, usually attending per meeting per week.
And they will give me a little feedback on the forum. And they will say, Okay, great, you know, you should, you should be a little bit louder, you know, move a little bit more, maybe have more eye contact with the audience. So then they would get feedback.
And I’ll go back and look at the feedback and improve, right? So, and I was very dedicated, I was attending these meetings weekly. I joined took two clubs, and I would go to two different clubs, I was practicing twice as much. And I was learning and growing very fast.
After about a period of data me a few months, I noticed the feedback form started to change, right? I would say, Oh, you know, outstanding, you know, you’re very talented, you know, or you are a natural, write a very compelling speech. And I would look at those feedback forms, and I wish I still have them. I will look at those feedback forms I’m looking at, like, talented.
Where does that come from? is that if nothing about what I do is talent. It is all because I practice way more than most. So very often, when you want to get a different result, you want to make more money, you want to have more success. And we look at somebody like Wow, he was he’s so good. She’s so talented, and all these things.
And I always believe technique over talent, there’s nothing about what I do that it’s about talent. It’s all about technique. Everything that I do on a skill set that I have, from not knowing how to do something to learn how to do something to get good at it to mastering certain techniques is always a process.
Talent or Technique Blog Summery
Right? So you have someone very talented, but you didn’t work on their techniques, they’re not going to be good. Talent alone doesn’t go very far. If you are willing to outlearn and outsmart and outperform someone with more talents than you and you focus on the techniques. You focus on the techniques and your practice right putting those hours you will see is always technique over talent and chances are you’ll get the same feedback that I got once you get good, it’s all your natural, you gifted you You’re so talented, but you know deep down is not talent. It is all technique.
